Ever since experiencing the saga of Burt Munro in the movie “The World’s Fastest Indian”, Jack Belcher has had a dream of driving the Fastest MINI Cooper on the Utah salt flats at Bonneville.
In September of 2006, Jack Belcher along with a small group of supporters went to World of Speed week at the Bonneville Salt Flats to attempt a 130 mph run in his 2004 JCW MINI. That first attempt ended with rain and a top-speed of 120 mph, but it started something special: The SCMM Fantasy Racing Team.
In 2007 Jack and the Team came back, bigger, better equipped, and ready to “Assault the Salt”. The speeds got faster, and the Team gained much-needed experience regarding exactly what kind of power and finesse would be needed to take a MINI Cooper over that magic 130 mph mark on soft salt.
By the time the 2008 World of Speed came around, the Team was ready. This time with more MINIs, much more horsepower, and an arsenal of salt-running tricks up their sleeves. It all came together on a beautiful sunny day in September when Jack officially became a member of the “130 Club”, finally achieving the goal he had set for himself two years earlier. Along the way, several other members of the Team also earned their 130 Club memberships as well. Altogether, eight members of the Team achieved speeds of better than 130 mph, a feat that had seemed unlikely even one year earlier.
